Remember when Social Media consisted of AOL or Yahoo chat rooms? If the room was busy, the comments would scroll by so fast that you could hardly read them! Back then, the main purpose was to be social and connect with people from all over the world, except for an occasional bot trying to promote some porn or dating site, the majority of the people online did not seem to care about promoting their business, they were just looking to make friends.
With the growth of this type of media, times sure have changed. While it does seem that the majority of people are still looking to connect with others, promoting business sure seems to play a larger role. It’s like we are mixing business with pleasure with hopes of creatively connecting to make some sales. Now days, it seems like the social media sites are more than just a place to make friends and kill some time.
And there is nothing wrong with that, except for when people get offended, and lately it seems like they always do. It’s all in good fun until someone follows advice that was given based on very little information about the situation, and it affects their business. There is nothing wrong, except for when your employer watches you online, monitoring your behavior, which more employers are beginning to do. It is all good, except for when someone decides to use their mor
al compass to police others online, and runs to tell. There is nothing wrong with it until someone doesn’t really understand.
Personally, I look at social media as a big coffee house full of people, or kind of like hanging out a club. There are so many different types of people, from conservatives to comedians, all with different personalities and beliefs who are all bringing their emotions, experiences and yes, their baggage with them when they post and give advice and yes, even when they read. So you can’t take it too seriously.
If you find yourself getting offended by a post; just UN-friend, or leave the group, no need to get your panties in a bunch, keep in mind not everyone thinks like you do. Before you take advice from an answer to your question in a thread, keep in mind that the advice is given based on black and white words, part of a story, the people who reply don’t live in your world. Most of all; lighten up and take it for what’s it worth, because it is all just a bunch of opinions anyway.
